A World War II preschool rings again with children’s shouts

A World War II preschool rings again with children’s shouts

By: William Harless, Photo Gallery: Wendi Jonassen | September 30, 2011 – 12:45 pm

A Mexican folk dance, an African-American gospel song, a restored World War II era school building, and a happy principal.

“There are two things you can give to children, in general: roots and wings,” said Peppina Chang, the principal of the Richmond College Prep Schools. And today her preschoolers are getting their wings in a building whose roots dig deep into the heart of modern American history — although those roots had almost crumbled.

Family Math Night

Are you having a hard time helping your child with their math homework?

I sure did when my children were in school. Thank goodness for family math nights where the teacher explained in detail how to solve those algebra problems that left me looking at the text book upside-down. If you would be interested in spending an evening learning or refreshing what you already know, respond to this post and let me know. Learn how we instruct your child in math. Teach us your strategies and let’s share insights together. Respond with a comment below and let me know.

Parents are getting getting high touch and high tech!

RCP Schools has begun gathering email addresses of all parents and guardians of our students in an effort to

keep the lines of communication open.  High tech is a term that speaks about closing the great divide between those who have computer skills and those who don’t.  Richmond College Prep Schools has been involved with Building Blocks for Kids (BBK) for about a year in the program to teach computer skills to Richmond residents and give them a reconditioned computer.

The program continues to distribute computers from several locations while RCPS is one of the training sites involved in helping to educate adults on the computer basics.   “We have probably been responsible for the training of at least 100 individuals and continue to offer training by appointment on Saturdays at 9:30 am at 214 South 11th Street, Richmond, on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month.”  Our next class will be Saturday, October 8th taught by our very own 5th grade teacher, Mr. Wilson.  To sign up for the computer training just give us a call:  510-235-2066.

It is easy for me to volunteer to teach computer classes because I am very passionate about technology.  Richmond College Prep has opened it’s doors to allow the training to be done here at our school.  We have had several staff members volunteer to teach the classes and the response from the community has been great.  Students come in and learn at their level of understanding which ranges from “I never even put my hands on a computer before;” to “I know how to do a resume and check email, but that’s all.”  Some students know Microsoft Word and Excel, but are not sure how to search the Internet, set up an email, or connect a computer right out of the box.

In the midst of the computer classes, RCPS has a website, and most recently, a blog to help communicate with families more, and keep them posted about what is happening at the school.  However, if families don’t have Internet access to view the website and blog at home, we will show them here at school.  There is no longer any excuses for now being aware of what is going on at College Prep.

Parents are encouraged to seek help in setting up an email account to participate in the communication updates and give feed back with their comments and suggestions about additional content.  Teachers and staff are on board and are preparing classroom news to post as you read this post.  You can expect to see more in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

p.s.  If you have pictures, videos and things to share with families, please let us know.

Don’t be an angry parent!

Dale Sadlers’ article caught my eye on the  “Empowering Parents” website.  He is well equipped to discuss this topic because Dale Sadler is a counselor, speaker, minister, artist, writer, and avid hiker. Dale works full time as a school counselor but at his private family counseling practice he specializes in marriage, parenting, and men’s issues. Dale’s passion for the family compels him to aid them in their journeys towards peace and empowerment.

Ms. Wiley’s 4th Grade ~ Week of October 3rd

Hello Parents and welcome to our blog!

This week we are finishing our final story in the Risk & Consequence Unit of our Open Court Reading Books. We are reading a myth called “Daedalus and Icarus.” Please be sure to have your students reread it to you and give you a summary of the story. In math, we are preparing for our Chapter 4 test on Wednesday. We have been studying variables, writing expressions and equations, and solving word problems. Please continue to have your students practice their times tables with you so that they can become automatic for them. The better they know their multiplication, the easier division will be for them, and math in general.

On Thursday, October 6th, your child has another opportunity to become CERTIFIED! We have been practicing certification problems for weeks and it is my hope that ALL of my students will be certified. Please practice problems with them and review the site word list you were given at the beginning of the year. If you need another list, please let me know.

Finally, it is very important that students complete their homework every night. It is their opportunity to practice what we have learned in class so they can be successful at mastering the content. Please set aside time and a quiet location for them to get their work done that they have not finished at school.

Cheers to a great week!

~Ms. Wiley
