Mateus Chavez, Board Vice President
Mateus Chavez, a proud Bay Area native, was shaped by the vibrant communities of Berkeley and Oakland, and went on to earn a degree in Chicano Latino Studies from San Francisco State University. He descends from a lineage of political trailblazers who, like César Chávez, believed in the power of collective action and dedicated their lives to the fight for dignity, equity, and true democracy. For over 15 years, Mateus has carried forward that legacy—working on grassroots campaigns focused on equity, justice, and community empowerment. His advocacy extends beyond the political arena and into the heart of social service, where, as an Accredited Disability Representative, he has helped countless individuals with disabilities navigate the legal system to access critical life-sustaining benefits. As a father of two, Mateus is deeply invested in the future of public education. He believes that every child, regardless of background or zip code, deserves a high-quality, equitable education. His work is grounded in the belief that schools are not just institutions of learning but powerful vehicles for social change.
